There are two major SEO methods that are often conflicted, the esteemed white hat and the infamous black hat.
White hat versus black hat
This kind of classification came from the metaphorical black and white portrayal of characters in the westerns. Namely, protagonists were usually the ones in white while the antagonists wore black. Even though both white and black hat are methods of SEO the way they work is essentially different.
Black hat usually works through hidden text, cloaking, and different types of spamming. On the other hand, white hat bases its work on providing quality content with subtly incorporated and relevant keywords. Because both of these methods have their pros and cons, white hat versus black hat is a never-ending debate.
The allure of the dark side
Most pro black hat people take their biggest stand in the fact that black hat methods really do work. Even though reliable surveys to support this claim are rare, they usually make these conclusions based on the efforts Google invests to bring the black hat down.
Some black hatters even claim that they follow a certain code of ethics, trying to distance themselves from spammers. The reality however is much grimmer.
Although they may achieve some results, the fact is that black hat, significantly lowers the overall quality of online content. Furthermore, with their unrelated keywords, as well as Bait-and-Switch or Page Swapping methods they can seriously smear a good name of a company.
It doesn’t take Google long to figure out the black hat and when this happens, any short term success will quickly be turned to ashes.
Looking at the long run
On the other hand, white hat is all about trust. By looking at your blogging as a marathon instead of a race, you will slowly start building your SEO reputation bottom up.
Any serious business will always rather work on their gradual, yet solid, branding development than any kind of momentary success.
An interesting content supported by trusted sources is first step on this path. Creating a relevant content and making your audience come to you is always better than flooding their inbox with unwanted messages or luring them in to visit your website.
Finally, nothing that is worth in life ever comes easily. Just take the example of Jordan Belfort’s sudden rise to wealth and glory, which only facilitated his inevitable fall.
In light of all this, a code of ethics (a real one) and patience are two key features that essential for success. Stay on the course and build a name for yourself, reaping the benefits of your brand design takes serious time and effort. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a single day and neither will your business empire.
